The U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Infrastructure Office (RIO) will host the 2025 Safety Officer Workshop on January 14-15, 2025, at LIGO Livingston Observatory in Livingston, LA. This workshop is by invitation only.
NSF RIO invites select facility safety officers and safety professionals in the RI Community to participate in a two-day knowledge-sharing forum to discuss experienced challenges and lessons learned. The program also includes a facility tour of the co-host facility, LIGO. Virtual attendance is available. A draft of the agenda will be posted soon.
In-Person: The fee to attend the workshop in person is $150. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, and refreshments.
There is limited space for in-person attendance. Those planning to attend in person should register soon to reserve their spot.
Virtual: NSF RIO is delighted to offer a virtual attendance option for those unable to join us in person. There is no fee for virtual event registration. The workshop will use Zoom for streaming.
In-person attendees can present posters at the workshop, offering a great opportunity to:
- Connect with peers in your field and explore collaboration.
- Share your work with the research infrastructure community.
- Receive feedback to refine your safety program.
Posters will also be featured on the NSF Research Infrastructure Knowledge Gateway for future reference.

- Recommended poster size: 24” x 36” (no mounting required).
- Attendees are responsible for shipping their poster to and from the event. If you plan to ship back your poster, please bring a pre-paid return shipping label and keep the original packaging.

- The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR) is the closest airport to the workshop. It is approximately 10 miles from the Baton Rouge Marriott and about 40 miles from LIGO Livingston.
- The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), in Kenner, LA is about 65 miles from the Baton Rouge Marriott and about 70 miles from LIGO Livingston.
Car Rentals & Ride sharing:
- Car rentals, taxis, and ridesharing services are readily available at both the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. All options provide a convenient and direct way to Baton Rouge and Livingston.
Workshop Transportation:
- Transportation will not be provided for the workshop. Attendees are responsible for transportation to and from LIGO. The typical drive time from the Baton Rouge Marriott to LIGO is approximately 35-minutes.
Oregon State University is offering attendees the opportunity to tour the Research Vessel Construction in Houma, LA. This tour is not a part of the formal Safety Officer Workshop. It will be offered on January 16, 2024 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Attendees are responsible for transportation to and from the construction site.
