INFORMATION

In-person workshop attendees will have the opportunity to attend one tour on Wednesday, March 27 (if they are registered for that day). Tour spots are limited. Please make your selection during registration. (If you are registering a group of people, please email rioutreach@nsf.gov to confirm individual tour selections.)

Kitt Peak National Observatory 

  • Please be aware that Kitt Peak has a peak elevation shy of 7,000 feet (2096 meters) above sea level at the summit. 
  • Participants should be able to walk the distances between the telescopes and climb stairs. 
  • Flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required inside summit facilities.  
  • Non-U.S. Citizens must bring a passport or green card. Transportation route could include passing through the Border Control checkpoint on Arizona State Route 86. 

Biosphere 2  

  • While much of the Biosphere 2 campus is wheelchair accessible, certain areas of the property are not accessible due to the steep terrain and the presence of stairs.
  • Flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required inside summit facilities.

Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab  

  • A portion of the tour involves walking and climbing and descending stairs. 
  • Flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required. 

Kitt Peak National Observatory

Kitt Peak National Observatory 

Kitt Peak is shy of 7,000 feet (2096 meters) above sea level at the summit. Temperatures are cooler in this area compared to Tucson and vary by season. Please consider any personal health issues that could arise from the altitude or walking at this elevation.  

This tour could require extensive walking. Most facilities visited are not wheelchair accessible. 

Flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are required inside of summit facilities.  

Non-U.S. Citizens – Although the Visitor Center is open to all, the U.S. government requires passports or green cards for visitors from other countries when driving eastbound through the Border Control checkpoint on Arizona State Route 86. Please be sure you bring your passport with you to avoid potential difficulties.

Biosphere 2

Biosphere 2 

While much of the Biosphere 2 campus is wheelchair accessible, certain areas of the property are not accessible due to the steep terrain and the presence of stairs. Most of the biomes, including the desert, savanna, ocean, and rainforest, are all accessible by wheelchair or scooter. 

Flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended 

Attendees are encouraged to bring a refillable bottle for water. Water refill stations are located throughout the facility.

Workshop Group Registrations and Tour Selection

Workshop attendees whose workshop registration was made as part of a group (for example, an administrative assistant registered each attendee from your organization) must email their individual tour selection as soon as possible to rioutreach@nsf.gov to confirm their tour reservation.
