How We Strengthened Major Facility Oversight with NSF: Highlights of NSF Office of Inspector General Audit Work

The National Science Foundation Office of Inspector General Office of Audits has completed a decade of work focused on improving NSF, and recipient, major facility oversight. Our work spans a facility’s life from construction and operations to divestments. NSF has partnered with us in implementing recommended improvements. NSF has improved its oversight, including creating a tracking tool for equipment at major facility recipients; requiring recipient incurred cost audits and accounting system reviews; and developing numerous standard operating guidance surrounding contingency, management reserve, management fee, and cost estimates, just to name a few.
