A Tailored Project Management Approach to Accomplish a Major Upgrade of a Continuously Operating Facility: ESnet

Kate Petersen Mace, ESnet6 Project Director and ESnet Network Services Group Lead based at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will share Project Management (PM) practices used for the recent network upgrade, ESnet6. ESnet network upgrades are driven by a formal requirements gathering process and ESnet6 utilized a tailored PM process to complete the project ahead of schedule and under budget, while keeping the network fully operational for the entire DOE complex throughout project execution. The tailored PM approach allowed for multiple phased transitions to operations and used an alternative to EVM for project performance that is accepted within the DOE Order 413.3B Project Management framework.
